Meditation on Amitaba – The Buddha of Limitless Light

We remember the four thoughts that give direction to our lives and take refuge in the Buddha, Dharma, Sangha and especially in the Lama (Karmapa) and now develop the aspiration to become able to benefit all sentient beings. Then, the Buddha of Limitless Light (tib: Opagme, skt: Amitabha) appears above our heads. He is red like a mountain of rubies in the light of a thousand suns and more majestic and beautiful than anything imaginable. We understand that his state is all we could ever desire and that he is truly Karmapa’s essence. He sits in meditation posture holding a bowl containing the nectar of highest bliss.

Above our right shoulder and slightly lower than Opagme stands Loving Eyes (tib: Chenrezig) in his white four-armed form. Above our left shoulder stands Diamond In Hand (tib: Channa Dorje) – the power of all of the Buddhas – in his peaceful blue form, holding dorje and bell. The power field of all the lamas of the lineage, of all the Buddhist teachers we have confidence in, surrounds them and as we recite the mantra OM AMI DEWA HRI we wish very strongly to be able to go to them.

After repeating the mantra as many times as we can, the energy field of all the lamas melts into the three central forms. Chenrezig and Channa Dorje melt into Amitaba who then dissolves into us as a blessing. We keep this awareness of Amitaba / Karmapa as well as we can, now and also between sessions.
